BSD faculty members lead professional bodies Three associate professors of the Behavioral Sciences Department have been elected to head professional associations. Norella represents DLSU-M in Brain 2004 Conference Dr. Loyd Brendan Norella, deputy project director for Mental Health of the Social Development Research Center (SDRC) and faculty member of the Psychology Department, will represent DLSU-Manila in the Brain 2004 Conference. It will be held at the Prince of Wales Hospital in Hong Kong from December 10-11. He will present a paper titled “Dementia Research in the Philippines-Status and Directions”. The two-day conference is a multi-disciplinary meeting of experts on nervous system diseases in the Asia-Pacific region. This year, the conference will focus on researches in brain tumors, dementia, neuro-regeneration, and white matter imaging. SC launches Christmas tree project Adorn the Lasallian community’s Christmas Tree of Hope at the Ground Floor of the Don Enrique Yuchengco Hall and share the blessings of the season. Launched by the Student Council during the opening of the Advent celebration last November 30 at the Central Plaza, the Christmas tree-lighting project aims to raise funds for SC’s adopted community—Barangay 91 in Pasay City. DLSU-Manila Executive Vice President Dr. Carmelita Quebengco hanged the first star. Members of the community who wish to hang a star are invited to drop a donation. La Salle celebrates Volunteers’ Week The Center for Social Concern and Action (COSCA) joined the observance of National Volunteers’ Month this December with its celebration of Volunteers’ Week from Dec 1-3. Carrying the theme, “Pagtibayin at Pagyamanin ang Bolunterismo sa Puso ng mga Lasalyano,” the event aimed to promote, enrich, and strengthen the culture of volunteerism in the University; highlight and recognize different volunteer initiatives done by the Lasallian volunteers and other Filipino volunteers; and promote volunteerism as a tool for development in the academe, communities, government, and private sectors. Various volunteer organizations set up their booths and distributed information materials. Among the organizations that participated were United Nations Volunteer (UNV), VSO-Bahaginana, Volunteer Organization Information Coordination and Exchange (VOICE), Philippine National Volunteer Service Coordination Agency (PNVSCA), Philippine Business for Social Progress (PBSP), Haribon Foundation, Hands-On Manila, Habitat for Humanity, and the Lasallian Volunteer Program (LSVP). On December 5, 1998, December was declared National Volunteers’ Month under Presidential Proclamation No. 55 to recognize the efforts of volunteers and their contributions to society.
