CED holds orientation for parents The College of Education held its annual parents’ orientation last June 27 at the Yuchengco Multipurpose Hall. Br. Andrew Gonzalez FSC, presidential adviser for Academics and Research of the De La Salle University System, graced the affair as the keynote speaker. CED Vice Dean Dr. Remedios Miciano led the invocation, followed by the opening remarks given by the newly appointed college dean, Dr. Barbara Wong-Fernandez, to welcome the parents and other guests. Dr. Rosario de Guzman, director for the undergraduate program, discussed the academic policies of the college. In his talk, Br. Andrew stressed that the University is trying its best to improve the quality of education by assuring that CED’s academic programs are up to date and its content and methodology are excellent. He also added that the University is ensuring that Lasallian education graduates not only know their field but also have the capability to communicate knowledge through dedicated teaching. Br. Andrew reiterated that teaching is a noble profession and that it is fulfilling and self-actualizing. A mini-guided tour and individual meetings with the different chairs of the various CED departments capped the orientation. It was noted that there was an increase in the number of parents who attended the activity this year. The event was made possible through the efforts of the CED administration and staff, with the assistance of the CED Student Council and ESSENCE. AFAP lines up activities The Advanced Filipino Abroad Program (AFAP) announces its forthcoming activities. The 12 Fulbright scholars—Tamara Agunat, Richard Cantora, James Andrew Edington, Charity Espiritu, April Pearl Evangelista, Leilanie Marquez, Lear-la Narvaez, Elymar Redor, David Shaw, Micha Suarez, Marie Therese Sulit, and Vanessa Quiban—have all readied their parts for their debate, including their individual research presentations. The class is also preparing their own newsletter and t-shirt design. The short-term immersion program is an intensive course in Filipino language and culture. The curriculum features lectures from experts in the different themes of the structured classes, lakbay-aral tours, staying with host families, and interaction with native speakers outside the campus. The AFAP this year takes pride in its implementation with trained teachers of Filipino as a foreign language, headed by Dr. Imelda De Castro, associate professor of the Departamento ng Filipino, international lecturer, experienced teacher of Basic Filipino at DLSU-Manila, and textbook writer. She is joined by co-faculty member Dr. Felicitas Herrera. The AFAP holds its closing exercises on August 1, 2-5 p.m., at the Ariston Estrada Seminar Room.
