On
April 17, 1668, St. La Salle received the minor orders of
priesthood. He was ordained a priest ten years later, on April
9, 1678. He would later renounce his position as canon at
the Cathedral of Rheims to form the first community of Brothers
of the Christian Schools
He introduced innovative methods of education, preferring
group, rather than individual instruction and integrating
religious with secular subjects.
St. La Salle received the Last Rites on April 5, 1719. Before
he died, he learned that he had been deprived of the exercise
of his priestly powers in the diocese of Rouen. He died on
April 7, 1719.
