Evasco inaugurates BNS Library and Museum in Naga City

Bienvenido N. Santos Creative Writing and Research Center Director Dr. Marjorie Evasco attended the inauguration of the Bienvenido N. Santos Library and Museum of the University of Nueva Caceres (UNC) in Naga City. With UNC President Dolores Hernandez Sison, Evasco cut the ribbon of the opening exhibit called “Bienvenido N. Santos and the University of Caceres”. The event was held on March 22, the 91st birth anniversary of Santos.

Students of DLSU-M’s Internet-enhanced MA program in Teaching of Literature held a poetry reading to celebrate the occasion. They were Abe Belleza, Epifania Borja, Aurora Caballero, Joy Capiral, Janet Fabay, Pilar Hernandez, Frank Peñones, Elsa Tibi, and Franchette Mangonon.

The BNS Library and Museum collection includes the literary papers, books, and memorabilia of the writer, who served UNC as its dean of the College of Liberal Arts, and later as vice-president for academics.

Literature students and researchers are welcome to make use of the library. The Bienvenido N. Santos Library and Museum is under the office of Dr. Lourdes Santos Anonas, UNC executive vice-president and youngest daughter of Santos.

Prudente and Aguja attend WHO-sponsored conference

Dr. Maricar Prudente and Dr. Socorro Aguja of the Science Education Department participated in the international conference on “Environmental Threats to the Health of Children: Hazards and Vulnerability” on March 3-7 at Chulalongkorn Research Institute (CRI) in Bangkok, Thailand.

Prudente presented her study on persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in human breast milk during one of the focus sessions. The focus session dealt with pesticides and POPs and their impact on the health of children.

The paper presentation underscored the residue levels of POPs detected in human breast milk that was collected from urban and dumpsite dwellers of Japan, Cambodia, Thailand, India, and the Philippines. The results presented included residues of dioxin and furans found in the breast milk samples analyzed. The research study is part of the JSPS Multilateral International Environmental Project.

The World Health Organization Task Force on Children’s Health and CRI jointly sponsored the said conference.

Robles joins scholarly journal

Associate Professor Alfredo Robles, Jr. of the Department of Political Science joins the editorial board of the Asia-Europe Studies journal to be published by the Asia-Europe Foundation in Singapore.

The invitation to join the scholarly journal is a fitting recognition of the research Robles has been doing on ASEAN-EU and Asia-Europe relations in the last few years.
Robles also serves the International Editorial Board of Global Governance, a review of multilateralism and international organizations, published by the Academic Council on the United Nations System (ACUNS) in the United States.
