IE students win national quiz contest

By besting 16 other schools, among them the University of the Philippines, University of Santo Tomas, University of San Carlos, Adamson University, and the Technological Institute of the Philippines, senior and junior Industrial Engineering students won first place in the recently concluded 14th Industrial Engineering Quiz Contest.

The students who composed the first team were Benson Calacday, Darlene Joy Uy, Joseph Hui, Lynn Lennie Ang, and Tonee Charmaine Co. On the other hand, the alternates were Joel Carlo Bugay, Raciel Go, Lou Rose Franco, Joy Roxanne Bibit, Raymond Regulacion, and Jocelyn Tan. IE professors Dr. Anna Bella Manalang, Richard Li, Eric Siy, Mark Go, and Natalie Tan, acted as coaches, preparing the team for almost a month for the rigid competition.

The range of topics covered by the contest included probability and statistics, operations research, production management, engineering economy, and ergonomics.

The contest was sponsored by the Philippine Institute of Industrial Engineers. Held at the George Dewey Convention Center in Subic, Olongapo City on March 2, the event was hosted by the Mondriaan Aura College of Olongapo.

BNSCWRC announces fellows for Kritika 2002

De La Salle University-Manila’s Bienvenido N. Santos Creative Writing and Research Center (BNSCWRC) announces the 10 fellows for its art criticism workshop at the University of St. La Salle (USLS), Bacolod on May 9-13.

Titled Kritika 2002, it is the first organized art criticism workshop in the Philippines. The forum will focus its discussion on the following arts: literature, visual arts, music, architecture, film, theatre, and the performing arts. It is envisioned to give young writers who want to commit themselves to art criticism a forum where they could discuss their work and concerns with art critics in the country.

The 10 workshop fellows are Arwin Tan of the Philippine Madrigal Singers, Maria Joselina Anna Cruz of Lopez Memorial Museum, Christine Bellen and Jonathan Chua of Ateneo de Manila University, Cecille La Verne de la Cruz of the University of the Philippines Mindanao, Florentino Iniego, Jr and Rommel Barona Rodriguez of the University of the Philippines Diliman, Ferdinand Lopez of the University of Santo Tomas, Eileen Ang of DLSU-College of St. Benilde, Anne Frances Sangil of DLSU-M, and Jonathan Tiu and Jambi Reyes representing the host institution, USLS-Bacolod.

Dr. Isagani Cruz is the workshop director. He will be joined by a panel of art critics: Oscar Campomanes (visual arts and literature), Antonio Hila (music), Bienvenido Lumbera (film, theatre and performing arts), Dom Bernardo Ma. Perez, OSB (architecture), and Soledad Reyes (popular culture and literature).The workshop is co-sponsored with USLS-Bacolod and supported by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts.
