DLSU-M faculty teach course for DFA

Faculty members of De La Salle University-Manila conducted a basic course in International Relations (IR) for the Foreign Service officers and employees of the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) from February 4 to 20. It is the first of the four classes in basic IR that will be conducted by La Salle professors.
Dr. Renato Cruz de Castro designed the course and delivered the lectures on the theories, concepts, and issues. Dr. Wilfrido Villacorta discussed the IR of East Asia and Dr. Alfredo Robles, Jr. delivered the lectures on the IR of Western Europe and International Organizations. On the other hand, Atty. Jose Luis Martin Gascon talked about International Law, while Gerardo Largoza taught International Political Economy.
Sponsored by the Foreign Service Institute, the course was intended to assist new DFA employees and officials acquire a rudimentary knowledge of the basic IR concepts and theories.

Maningas wins research paper contest

Religious Studies Department professor Dr. Ismael Maningas, Jr. won second place for his paper titled “Ang City of God ni San Agustin sa Ikatlong Milenyo: Isang Pagsusuri na Ginamit ang ‘Deconstruction and Process Analysis.’”The scholarly research paper contest, held on February 8, was sponsored by Colegio de San Agustin. Centering on the life and works of St. Augustine, the contest was open to all theologians and religious educators in the country.

Manalo attends international program on seismic design

Civil engineering professor Joseph Ramil Manalo was one of the four representatives from other academic and industry sectors who recently attended the International Training Programs for Seismic Design of Building Structures in Taiwan.
Sponsored by the Department of International Programs of the National Science Council and the National Center for Research on Earthquake Engineering (NCREE), the training program was attended by 24 other participants from El Salvador, Costa Rica, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, India, and Singapore.
The program consisted of information dissemination on the actual experience of Taiwan during the 1999 Chi-Chi earthquake. State-of-the-art earthquake monitoring equipment, researches, and seismic mapping of the whole country were also among the topics discussed during the event.
The training program aims to increase awareness in the region on how to deal with proper standards and parameters to be used in designing building structures against earthquakes.
