SDRC hosts corporate responsibility project meeting

The Social Development Research Center (SDRC) of De La Salle University-Manila (DLSU-M) hosted the second meeting of the Corporate Social and Environmental Responsibility Project on 18-22 February at the DLSU-College of Saint Benilde International Conference Center. Nine researchers and specialists based in South Africa, Spain, India, Switzerland, and the Philippines attended the affair.

The meeting was focused on the Philippine component of the research project titled “The Political Economy of Corporate Social and Environmental Responsibility in Developing Countries.” It has two major objectives: (1) to identify the voluntary initiatives of corporations in developing countries and their impacts on the environment, social development, and labor conditions; and (2) to identify the main forces, actors, pressures, policies, and incentives that are encouraging firms to improve their social and environmental performance.

The project is funded by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. It was coordinated by Dr. Peter Utting of the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development. Dr. Francisco Magno serves as the director of the Philippine component of the said project.

Aside from the four-day discussions and planning sessions, the participants will also conducted plant visits to corporations noted for their social and environmental initiatives.
