Social Development Research Center (SDRC) of De La Salle University-Manila
(DLSU-M) hosted the second meeting of the Corporate Social
and Environmental Responsibility Project on 18-22 February
at the DLSU-College of Saint Benilde International Conference
Center. Nine researchers and specialists based in South Africa,
Spain, India, Switzerland, and the Philippines attended the
The meeting was focused on the Philippine component of the
research project titled “The Political Economy of Corporate
Social and Environmental Responsibility in Developing Countries.”
It has two major objectives: (1) to identify the voluntary
initiatives of corporations in developing countries and their
impacts on the environment, social development, and labor
conditions; and (2) to identify the main forces, actors, pressures,
policies, and incentives that are encouraging firms to improve
their social and environmental performance.
The project is funded by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur
Foundation. It was coordinated by Dr. Peter Utting of the
United Nations Research Institute for Social Development.
Dr. Francisco Magno serves as the director of the Philippine
component of the said project.
Aside from the four-day discussions and planning sessions,
the participants will also conducted plant visits to corporations
noted for their social and environmental initiatives.
