DLSU-M to
feature Golez in GenXchange
De
La Salle University (DLSU)-Manila will hold a forum on Balikatan
Exercises with National Security Council Adviser/Director-General
Roilo Golez from 10 to 11:20 a.m. on February 28 at the Marilen
Gaerlan Conservatory. Titled “Balikatan: An Art of War?” Golez
will discuss the future of Philippine-US Security Relations,
the implication of the Balikatan exercises on the ongoing
military struggle in Basilan, and other issues confronting
the joint military exercises.
Political Science faculty Dr. Renato de Castro will lead the
panel of discussants. The audience will also have the opportunity
to ask questions through the open forum. Political science
faculty Antonio Pedro, Jr. will moderate the discussion.
Balikatan 2002 is a joint military exercise involving the
training of Filipino troops by Americans to boost the Armed
Forces of the Philippines’ drive against terrorism. Despite
the government’s assurance of its actual intent, socio-civic
groups such as the Peace Camp, criticize the program as unconstitutional,
a threat to national security, and undermines the capabilities
of the AFP and the country’s sovereignty.
Now on its fourth year, the GenXchange is a program of DLSU-Manila
which complements the classroom education of Lasallians by
exposing them to personalities they can dialogue with on issues
relevant to the youth.
GenXchange provides venues for faculty members to share resources
by serving as moderators and panelists and by assuring the
Lasallian community an intellectual yet engaging discussion.
The activity is sponsored by the Office of the President,
in cooperation with the Marketing Communication Office.
Personalities who have graced the forum include former President
Fidel Ramos, former Department of Interior and Local Government
Secretary Alfredo Lim, Jr., and President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo
when she was still the country’s Vice President.
