DLSU-M Fellow receives Gawad Guro

Full Professor of Philosophy and University Fellow Dr. Florentino Timbreza received the Gawad Guro 2002 in a ceremony held at the Pulungang Recto, Bulwagang Rizal, University of the Philippines on February 1.

Gawad Guro 2002 seeks to recognize and honor teachers for their great efforts in the propagation and intellectualization of the national language.

Twelve outstanding teachers from all over the country received the Kabayan Gawad Guro 2002 in two categories: teaching the Filipino subject in the elementary and secondary levels, and teaching the Filipino subject in the college and graduate level. Timbreza is the sole winner in the category, teaching a course in Filipino in the university level.

Holder of the Br. Lucian Athanasius Distinguished Chair of Philosophy and Letters and acting chair of the Philosophy Department, Timbreza is known in the University as the only one who has been teaching the subject Pilosopiyang Filipino since 1984. He is also the first to present and defend a dissertation paper in Filipino for a doctorate degree in philosophy.

Timbreza’s pioneering works include writing the first book on Pilosopiyang Filipino based on the indigenous experience and practical skills of the Filipino people. He is the author of the first and only translation of Tao Te Ching in Filipino, and the first full-length text book on Bioethics written in the Philippines. He also co-authored the first and only Encyclopedia of Philosophy in the country.

Meanwhile, Dr. Lakangiting Garcia of the Departmento ng Literatura at Wikang Filipino and Dr. Lakandupil Garcia of DLSU- Dasmariñas were also recognized for their valuable contribution in teaching the Filipino subject in the university level.

Launched this year, Gawad Guro 2002 is set to be an annual event sponsored by the Filipino broadsheet Kabayan Publishing Co., Inc., in coordination with the Department of Education, Commission on Higher Education, Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines, Philippine Association of State Colleges and Universities, and the Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino.
