La Salle celebrates its moving faith

De La Salle University-Manila celebrates its Mission Statement-University Week with the theme “Moving Faith” from January 21 to 26 as part of the University’s 10-year countdown to its centennial.

The celebration will commemorate the spirit of faith by which our founder St. John Baptist de La Salle drew inspiration to establish the first La Salle school. As a testimony to this calling, the Lasallian community will hold a presentation titled “Living the Lasallian Spirit: To Teach, To Touch, To Transform” at the Sentrum in De La Salle Lipa on January 25. St. La Salle’s feastday, which falls on January 26, also marks his 350th birth anniversary.

During the week, the University will be a showcase of activities and events that bear witness to the Lasallian faith-that-serves. The program themes will cover concern for the environment, spirituality, nationalism, children’s rights, and drugs, among other issues, and these will be tackled through lectures, symposia, seminars, and contests.

The fete will kick off with a Thanksgiving Mass to be held at the Amphitheater on January 21 at 8:15 a.m. Throughout the week, observers can view at the Student’s Plaza a BAMCREF exhibit featuring its various activities for public school children, as well as an exhibit by the College of Engineering on their countryside outreach programs.

Meanwhile, the College of Business and Economics (CBE) will hold an activity called “Adopt-a-Child” in which children from St. Anthony Parish in Singalong, a CBE-adopted community, will share an afternoon of fun and games with the students.

Now on its second year, the Lasallian Enrichment Alternative Program (LEAP) will offer students different tutorials and/or hands-on training on a plethora of topics of interest. The LEAP is meant to complement the classroom learning of students, and emphasize the total development of the person. The Student Council and the Council of Student Organizations sponsor the program.

The celebration will also be an avenue for fun and camaraderie-building. Community members will pit skills and agility as they get into fun games during the first day at the PE and Sports Complex. Basketball enthusiasts will also be treated to a tune-up game between Shell and Alaska on January 23, 1-2:30 p.m. at the PE and Sports Complex. Tickets are sold at P50 each, proceeds of which will be donated to “For the Kids”, the annual special Olympics held on campus.

Meanwhile, faculty members will showcase their performance talents in a variety show called “Talents Unlimited” to be held on January 24, 4:30-7:30 p.m. at the William Shaw Theater.
The week will culminate in a concert featuring the Passage Band and Parokya ni Edgar. The concert, titled “Moving Faith in Music: DLSU @ 90,” is sponsored by the Engineering College Assembly. Tickets are sold at P120 each.
