Brother gets honorary degree
De La Salle University System President Brother Rolando Dizon,
FSC conferred the honorary degree of Doctor of Humanities
(honoris causa) on Louis John Michael Jacques, also known
as Brother Theodoret Michael, FSC, in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
on December 7.

The
Board of Trustees and the academic community of De La Salle
University-Manila recognized Br. Michael for his meritorious
contributions and achievements in education. For 63 years
now, he has been serving in various capacities as a La Salle
Brother in the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian
Schools.
While he was based in Rome from 1966 to 1976, he was appointed
as the Assistant-Superior General for Asia. This position
resulted in the formation of Brothers’ communities and schools
in the Asian region particularly in Malaysia, Pakistan, India,
Ceylon, Burma, Thailand, Laos, South Vietnam, Hong Kong, and
Singapore.
As a Christian educator, he has shared his expertise with
other educational entities in Malaysia. He is the founder
and advisor of the Malaysian Federation of Lasallian Associations.
Since 1962, he has handled key positions in Malayan Christian
Schools and has built several schools in the region. Among
them are the St. Xavier’s Branch School Penang, La Salle-Ayer
Itam, La Salle Junior Training Center, Ipoh, and Assumption
School Extension, Butterworth, and St. George’s Balik Pulau.
His meritorious contributions to the cause of education have
earned him a number of awards. In 1963, he received the AHLI
MANGKU NEGARA from his Majesty the Yang Di-Pertuan Agong of
Malaysia, and the PINGAT JASA KEBANGSAAN by the Governor of
Penang in 1992.
Br. Michael’s conferment is part of DLSU-M’s continuing efforts
to strengthen relationship with partner Lasallian institutions
in Malaysia. Among La Salle’s other programs include assistance
and consultancy particularly in their curriculum and academic
programs.
