win 20th National
Book Awards

La Salle University Fellows Dr. Ma. Lourdes Bautista and Dr.
Clodualdo del Mundo, Jr. won in the 2000 National Book Awards
given by the prestigious Manila Critics Circle last September
8 at the SM Megamall during the 12th Philippine Book Fair.
Bautista’s Defining Standard Philippine English: Its Status
and Grammatical Features, a scholarly study on the Philippine
variety of English, was adjudged best book in linguistics
while Del Mundo’s Bayaning 3rd World/Jose Rizal, co-authored
with Mike de Leon, bagged the best book award for the screenplay
category.
Del Mundo is professor at the Department of Communication
and Bautista is graduate studies director of the College of
Education.
Both books were published by De La Salle University Press,
Inc.
Meantime, a number of Lasallians were also included as finalists
in the Book Awards. Dr. Bienvenido Lumbera, a faculty member
of the Departmento ng Literatura at Wikang Filipino, was nominated
in the Literary Criticism category for his book, Writing the
Nation/Pag-akda ng Bansa (UP Press). Intended for a broad
audience of teachers, students, and assorted cultural workers,
his essays whether in English or Filipino, address the audience
in a language fairly accessible to many.
Another finalist was alumnus Jason Co (BS-ECE ‘93), who was
nominated for his essay book, The Spirit of 1896: A Mirror
of the Philippine Past, A Window on the Nation’s Future (Philippine
Centennial Commission and UP Press). The work, which won the
grand prize in the essay category in the Philippine Centennial
Literary Contest, is a reflection and a rediscovery of the
things, the events, and the people that have made the Filipino
nation unique.
Literature graduate student Rebecca Añonuevo also made
it as a finalist for her children’s book, Ang Mahiyaing Manok
(Adarna House). The book contains the illustrations of Ruben
de Jesus.
Nominated for editing was the book The Estrella D. Alfon Anthology
Volume 1: Short Stories published by the DLSU Press and edited
by Herminia Santos-Bas. The collection was done by a textual
writer to put into proper perspective the author’s efforts
in the light of textual studies needed to be done on Philippine
literature because of the growing interest in the field vis-à-vis
literary criticism and literary history.
The Manila Critics Circle gives the National Book Awards to
the best books written, designed, and published in the Philippines.
The Circle is an organization of professional literary critics
and newspaper columnists who believe that Philippine books
deserve much more attention than what usually get from business,
media, and the general public.
