CNN-APC backs up GMA’s fight vs. poverty

On behalf of the Citizen’s National Network Against Poverty and Corruption (CNN-APC), DLSU System President Brother Rolando Dizon, FSC, gave its pledge of commitment to the government to help in the fight against poverty and corruption in a dialogue with President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in Malacañang on September 7.

Brother Dizon also presented the CNN-APC’s goals for the next three years notable of which is the area of education. The network aims to strengthen existing programs and create new ones for adult microenterprise training and lending, as well as out-of-school youth programs that will benefit at least 200,000 Filipinos. Some 100,000 students and adults will be provided with moral and spiritual formation. La Salle is expected to play a valuable role in fulfilling one of its major anti-poverty program, Education for All.

President Arroyo expressed her support for the initiatives of the private citizen’s network. She stressed the importance of civil society and the government working hand-in-hand towards national development using the State of the Nation Adress framework as guide.

She witnessed the signing of the Memorandum of Understanding between the CNN-APC and the Government Service Insurance System which provided a window loan amounting to P 2.5 billion for micro-financing. Land Bank of the Philippines acts as the guarantor while the People’s Credit and Finance Corporation (PCFC) as the wholesaler of the fund. The CNN-APC serves as the conduit to various non-governmental organizations (NGOs), foundations, schools which will distribute the fund to the mass sector.

The De La Salle University System is a member of the CNN-APC aims to eradicate poverty and corruption and harness the creative energies of every Filipino.

On the 29th of September, the founding congress on the anti-corruption network will be held, with Chief Justice Hilario Davide as the keynote speaker.
