COSCA
seeks help for Mayon victims
The
Center for Social Concern and Action (COSCA) is currently
accepting donations for the victims of the recent eruption
of Mayon Volcano in Albay. In a report of the National Disaster
Coordinating Council, some 46,000 individuals were displaced
form their homes due to this calamity. To date, government
volcanologists has placed Mayon at alert level four that signals
imminent eruption with intense unrest including low-frequency
earthquakes.
COSCA
has already gathered P 7,000 from faculty and staff contributions
through salary deductions. Members of the Lasallian community
who wish to donate cash may fill out the form for salary deduction
available at COSCA. These cash donations will be given to
the victims through DLSU-Dasmariñas.
On the other hand student organizations, particularly the
La Salle Computer Society, Englicom, and the Student Council,
are also accepting donations in kind, especially potable water.
Mayon Volcano exploded last June 23 endangering surrounding
areas fronting the Mabinit, Bonga, Matanag, and Buyuan gullies
from pyroclastic flows, volcanic blasts, and ground surges.
Affected areas also include barangays within the cities of
Legaspi, Ligao, Tabaco, and municipalities of Daraga, Camalig,
Guinobatan, Malilipot and Sto. Domingo.
The Office of Civil Defense reported that this year’s eruption
destroyed P39.9 million ($754,000) worth of crops and aquatic
resources.
