De La Salle University System President Brother Rolando Dizon,
FSC challenged the academic community to make a difference
by helping the nation in the fight against poverty and corruption
through relevant teaching and research.
Brother Roly emphasized the importance of service and excellence
in education as he ushered the Lasallian community into the
new school year during the annual Faculty General Assembly
at the Chapel of the Most Blessed Sacrament last May 30.
He pointed out that educators must also look for opportunities
to expose their students to social realities far from their
sheltered homes and to integrate the core values of faith,
service, and community in classroom teaching. As DLSU-Manila
continues to pursue its vision of becoming one of the premier
research universities in Asia, La Salle faculty should continue
producing research projects that will contribute to national
development.

DLSU-Manila
to honor Vatican archbishop
Archbishop Jean-Louis Tauran, the Vatican’s Secretary
for Relations with the States, arrived last Friday
for a five-day visit to the country, to express
the love of Pope John Paul II for the Filipinos
and his genuine concern for the welfare of this
nation.
Fr.
James Reuter of the National Office of Mass Media
said Archbishop Tauran will not make any political
statements but his presence here is important,
indicating that the Vatican looks upon the country
as one of the leaders of Asia.
As part of Archbishop Tauran’s five-day round
in the Philippines, a visit to DLSU-Manila will
be made, as the University confers him the degree
of Doctor of Humanities in International Relations,
on Tue, June 5, 4 p.m., at the M. Gaerlan Conservatory.
Aside from becoming a distinguished Vatican Ecclesiastical
Diplomat, he is also acknowledged as a public
affairs specialist & Canon Law expert.

On
the University’s expansion programs, Brother Roly reported
several on-going projects including the pending opening of
the Canlubang and Alabang campuses, and La Salle’s merging
with the Gregorio Araneta University Foundation (GAUF). Brother
Roly also gave an update on the DLS-Manado in Indonesia, which
was opened last year. He added that the first group of lay
faculty who were sent to Manado will be replaced this new
school year.
At the same time, the Brother president also reported the
Inauguration
of graduate classes at the RCBC Plaza in Makati.
Brother Roly also mentioned faculty development plans, including
housing incentives and expanded scholarship programs for faculty
dependents. He said that Lasallian education must be accessible
to all sectors of society and should target full scholarships
to poor but deserving students, which is around 15 percent
of the total enrollees.
He urged the faculty to complete their doctoral studies soon,
to continue their research projects, and to generate revenues
by providing consultancy services to the external market,
not only in the Philippines but in Asia as well.
