DLSU-Manila
highlights IT research in global video conference
De
La Salle University-Manila highlighted the importance of information
and communication technology research as it represented the
country in an international video conference of leading universities
during the 84th anniversary celebration of Chulalongkorn University
in Thailand on March 27.
DLSU
System President Brother Rolando Dizon, FSC stressed the need
to strike a balance between technological revolution and liberal
education, citing the University’s pioneering efforts in information
technology in Philippine education.
He
said that the academic community worldwide should maintain
strong links in the face of developments in information technology.
He cited as an example the Virtual University, a project currently
being developed by the ASEAN University Network, to which
DLSU-Manila is a partner. With the Virtual University, the
member universities will have an inter-library access and
shared online courses.
During the video conference, he underscored DLSU-Manila’s
research priorities and said that research in a developing
country like the Philippines must be primarily geared towards
poverty alleviation.
Aside
from information and communication technology, he said La
Salle’s other major areas of research are in the fields of
social science, and natural sciences and engineering.
According to him, three main areas must be addressed in the
social sciences research. One area should focus on how to
combat corruption in government. Another should look into
effective governance, with focus on the devolution of authority
to local government units. A third area for study is on microenterprise
development.

the only other Philippine university in the conference, underscores
the importance of research on agriculture.
The event, which carried the theme “The Role of Research Universities
in the Next Decade,” involved participating sites from Hong
Kong, Japan, and the United States.
Presidents and representatives of various universities in
Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia,
Taiwan, USA, Vietnam, and Thailand joined the discussion.
The conference generated a discussion on the current research
programs of the universities, establishing a venue to assess
the research they have undertaken and to discuss their research
plans. (Marjorie Ann Duterte)
