CENSER
director joins talk on garbage crisis
“Before
any technology can be applied, we have to maximize the use
of a particular product to minimize unwanted consumer by-product.
There is no such thing as garbage, only misplaced resource.”
Center for Natural Sciences and Environmental Research (CENSER)
Director Dr. Eric Punzalan shared this simple solution as
he gave his feedback on the research findings presented by
the scientists of the University of the Philippines in a forum
on “Talking Trash: A Scientific Discussion on Garbage” last
February 21 in UP Diliman.
Generally, the scientists zeroed in on the the sanitary landfill
technology as still the best possible solution to the worsening
problem of garbage particularly in Metro Manila.
A scientific perspective on effective waste management was
provided by the speakers as issues on sources and mechanisms
of ground water contamination and geologic considerations
of a dumping site were discussed in details. Punzalan is an
organic chemist and has been doing research for 10 years in
the field.
Power
lunch a la DLSU-Manila to be served to high schoolers
In
its continuing effort to invite the best and the brightest
high school students from all over the country to live the
Lasallian experience, De La Salle University-Manila hosted
Lunch with the Titans.
The event was an informal gathering of some of the country’s
key industry and government leaders and selected student applicants
who topped the entrance examinations. It was held on February
26 at the M. Gaerlan Conservatory.
The event aimed to encourage high school students who applied
for courses in the College of Business and Economics (CBE)
to enrol at the University. These future movers and shakers
in business were given an opportunity to interact with the
La Salle alumni who are leaders in their respective fields
in business, economics, or management. The College of Business
and Economics was more than proud to present its outstanding
alumni who shared to the student applicants insights instrumental
to their success and how the University contributed to their
formation.
CBE dean Dr. Tereso Tullao rendered the inspirational talk,
while Economics Department vice chair Gerardo Largoza was
the master of ceremony for the said event.
Errata
In
last week’s story, DLSU-Manila admin backs Brother Andrew
for VPA post, we should have written that the nomination of
Brother Andrew was made in view of Dr. Wyona Patalinghug’s
contract term as VPA, which ends this May.
In the same issue, we inadvertently mentioned that Dr. Alfredo
Robles Jr. belongs to the International Studies Department,
instead of the Political Science Department. Our apologies.
