Scientific Minds to discuss garbage crisis

for Natural Sciences and Environmental Research (Censer) Director
Dr. Eric Punzalan will participate in a seminar-forum titled
“Talking Trash: A Scientific Discussion on Garbage” on February
21 at the University of the Philippines, Diliman.
Punzalan was chosen to be one of the distinguished representatives
from the private sector to give feedback on research findings
to be presented by scientists from UP. Talks to be given include
“Sources and mechanisms of groundwater contamination,” “Scientific
landfill design,” and “The Japanese experience on recycling.”
The research studies aim to give an objective solution to
the country’s garbage disposal problem. The forum also seeks
to give a scientific perspective on effective waste management.

faculty and staff join Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary
Dr.
Jose S. Carandang VI, Dr. Eric Punzalan, and Mr. Elpidio Retes
of the College of Science were recently inducted as members
of the Philippine Coast Guard Auxiliary. Punzalan and Carandang
hold the rank of Lieutenant Commander while Mr. Retes is a
Lieutenant Senior Grade.
They
were inducted last January 26 by no less than Vice-Admiral
Euceo Fajardo, Philippine Coast Guard Commandant. The three
will join the Marine Pollution and Environmental Protection
Division of the 106th Squadron.

faculty named editor of international journal
Graduate
School Business faculty Anthony SF Chiu was named editor of
the special issue of John Wiley’s International Journal of Business
Strategy and the Environment for 2002.
Chiu was proposed to the Greening Industry Networking Conference
for this editorship during his recent participation at the 6th
UNEP International Cleaner Production High Level Summit at Montreal.
Chiu was also a visiting professor and delivered a lecture to
the graduate students at Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova
Scotia in October 2000.
Chiu’s recent publications were in the field of Total Quality
and Environmental Management, with specialization in Cleaner
Production and Ecological Industrial Park Management. His upcoming
Asian EIP article will be published in the Proceeding of 2000
Taiwan EIP Workshop and 2001 Conference on Environment and Development
in Vietnam.
Chiu will also coordinate and speak in the forthcoming International
Conference and Workshop on Industrial Ecology, to be jointly
sponsored by the
European Union in early April 2001 to be held in Manila.
