Chem Eng chair arrives from UK university study visit
Dr.
Susan Roces, chair of the Chemical Engineering Department,
returned last December 2 after a one-month visit to the University
of Portsmouth, United Kingdom. Her visit was in relation to
the academic link of the College of Engineering with the University
of Portsmouth on environmental engineering and management.
While
there she prepared an end-of-link report through consultations
with Dr. Simon Claridge, link coordinator of University of
Portsmouth and Dr. Mike Purvis, the link adviser.
During
her brief stay, she also co-authored with Dr. Mike Purvis
and Stanley Santos a technical paper titled “Model Development
for a Small Underfeed Stoker Firing Lump Wood.”
Roces
likewise attended a conference on Chemical Analysis in the
Energy Industry held at the Royal Society of Chemistry, Burlignton
House, London last November 2. The topics discussed in this
conference were characterized of fuels and hydrocarbons, monitoring
combustion and incineration processes, and emissions of large
organic species.
A three-year extension of the link with the University of
Portsmouth is presently being worked out. Roces is currently
preparing the extension link proposal titled “Development
of Environmental Systems Management Programmes in the Philippines.”
Science Education Department chair speaks
in international meet
Science
Education Department Chairperson Dr. Maricar Prudente participated
in the International conference on Teacher Education 2001
at the Manila Hotel on January 10. Prudente spoke during the
concurrent session regarding the influence of teaching process
of college faculty on the learning process of practicumers.
The
research is part of the collaborative EDRENET research project
funded by the DOST-SEI and seven educational institutions
involved, namely: De La Salle University-Manila, Far Eastern
University, National Teachers College, Pamantasan ng Lunsod
ng Maynila, Philippine Normal University, and University of
the Philippines-Diliman.
