During the mid-year planning
workshop of DLSU-Manila administrators last December 4 at
the Angelo King International Center, Brother Roly in his
welcome remarks commended the growing research culture in
campus. He said with these research efforts, La Salle has
been receiving international attention and recognition from
various organizations. He also mentioned that research counted
a lot in improving DLSU-Manila’s record in the last Asiaweek
survey.
Brother Roly updated the workshop
participants on the Virtual University program, which would
link La Salle to top universities in Asia. The initial plan
is to develop an online course for a master’s degree in Southeast
Asian Studies.
Meanwhile, he also took the
initiative to invite Ateneo de Manila University, University
of Santo Tomas, University of the Philippines, Mapua Institute
of Technology, and STI College to help establish a virtual
Philippine university online library.
As to DLSU-Manila’s social
mission, Brother Roly reported the establishment of the Federation
of Lasallian Institutions (FLI)—composed of all member institutions
directly and indirectly managed by the De La Salle Brothers
Philippines—which aims to concretize the plans that were created
from the first Lasallian District Synod.
Another development in the
year 2000 was DLSU-Manila’s laying the groundwork for the
opening of De La Salle Catholic University of Manado, Indonesia.
He announced that this university has open slots for faculty.
Brother Roly also reported
the various physical developments in campus, such as the ongoing
construction of the Yuchengco central administration building
and the newly opened Brother Athanasius P.E. and Sports Complex.
At the same time, Brother Roly
reminded the workshop participants of the challenges that
they will face in the year ahead, especially with the country’s
current political situation.
