dean attends Lasallian educators congress
Dean of Student Affairs Monina
Banaynal recently participated in the Asia Pacific Lasallian
Educators Congress (APLEC) held in Madurai, India from December
1 to 6.
With the theme “Promotion of
Child Rights in Asia Pacific,” the annual event was attended
by administrators of La Salle institutions from 13 countries,
namely: Australia, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Myanmar, New
Zealand, Pakistan, Papua New Guinea , Philippines, Singapore,
Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam.
APLEC aims to involve Lasallian
educators in the promotion of justice for the youth. Participants
evaluated the effectiveness of their own ministry as a response
to the needs of young people. They also developed an action
program.
Other participants from the
Philippines were Brother Jun Estrellas, FSC; Nonoy Maralit
of La Salle Green Hills; and Evangeline de Peralta of De La
Salle Zobel.
Engineering
faculty attend international conferences
Faculty members from the College
of Engineering (COE) recently attended international conferences.
Dr. Susan Gallardo of the Chemical Engineering attended a
conference/workshop on Regional Research Collaboration held
in Upsala University, Sweden from November 30 to December
1. Gallardo served as program director in one of the sessions
of the conference.
Aside from this, she was also
one of the presenters in a knowledge fair where she discussed
the international partnership program of COE. Gallardo’s participation
was made possible by the invitation and sponsorship of the
Swedish International Development Agency.
Meanwhile, two faculty members
of the Industrial Engineering Department (IE) presented their
research papers in the 4th Asia-Pacific Conference on Human
Computer Interaction/Southeast Asian Ergonomics Society Conference
held last November 27 to December 1 in Singapore. Rosemary
Seva presented her paper titled “Fatigue Effects in Computer
Tasks” while Dr. Aida Velasco discussed “Anthropometry of
Filipino Female Workers.”
During the said conference,
Velasco was also elected as the new president of the Southeast
Asian Ergonomics Society.
Fellow IE faculty Dennis Beng
Hui delivered a talk on the use of simulation and linear programming
in a seminar sponsored by the Operations Research Society
of the Philippines. The seminar, titled “Enhancing Productivity
through Operations Research,” was held last December 6 at
the Manila Peninsula Hotel.
New
professorial chair in language education
Dr. Jack Richards, professor
of Applied Linguistics at the Regional Language Centre (RELC)
in Singapore and author of best-selling English-as-a-second-language
textbooks and respected tradebooks in applied linguistics,
recently endowed DLSU-Manila a professorial chair in language
education.
The endowment of the Jack C.
Richards Professorial Chair in Language Education was made
at the invitation of Dr. Ma. Lourdes Bautista of the English
Language Education Department when Bautista attended the RELC
Governing Board meeting in Singapore in September. The Chair
will be formally established early next year when Richards
visits the Philippines.

faculty give seminar-workshop on conducting recollection
College of Education faculty
Dr. Natividad Pagadut and Dr. Paz Canilao gave a seminar-workshop
to teachers who will be conducting recollections to grade
school and high school students at St. Paul Pasig from November
29 to 30.
Pagadut gave input on how to
use Scriptures and what to give in a recollection for children
and for teenagers, while Canilao taught teachers basic skills
in interpreting stories, poems, and proverbs which they could
use for their recollections.

chair lectures at UP Diliman
Dr. Manuel Belino, chair of
the Mechanical Engineering Department, lectured on the Codes
of Ethics of Filipino Engineers on December 2 at the National
Center of Transportation Studies, University of the Philippines-Diliman.
His lectures were part of the Professor Jose Ma. De Castro
Memorial Lectures 2000. The memorial lectures were organized
by the UP Diliman Department of Civil Engineering, Vibrametrics,
Inc., UP Association of Civil Engineering Students, and UP
Aggregates.
