Microsoft to honor La Salle for Excellence in IT

For excellence in information technology (IT) in the field of education, De La Salle University will be honored during the celebration of Microsoft Philippines’ fifth anniversary on August 31.

La Salle, chosen as the country’s top academic partner, will receive the citation together with other industry giants that are in partnership with Microsoft. Among these IT forerunners representing various fields are: Globe Telecoms, Smart Communications, Inc., Philippine Long Distance Telephone Company, Ayala Corporation, Manila Electric Company, and Zuellig Pharma Corporation.

Christophe Aulnette, Microsoft regional director, will present the citation at the awarding ceremonies.

Microsoft holds an annual Excellence Award, which is given to organizations that have effectively tapped Microsoft technology. Of the many proponents of Microsoft in the academic sector, only La Salle has been chosen for its pioneering efforts to develop the quality of education not only at the tertiary level, but also in the elementary and secondary level by supporting the training of teachers in IT.

La Salle’s strength in IT is recognized not only in the country but also in the region. In the recent Asiaweek survey of Asia’s best universities, DLSU-Manila ranked number one in the Philippines in terms of IT capacity. The University boasts of having the highest bandwidth as compared to that of other schools in the country.

Other IT initiatives of La Salle are: the provision of e-mail accounts and internet access to all students; the opening of an online program for Graduate School of Business students; and the establishment of the Center for Educational Multimedia. DLSU-Manila was also recently asked to lead the Asean University Network in the establishment of a virtual university in the region.

Earlier this May, La Salle signed a licensing agreement with Microsoft to run the campany’s software platform on computers within La Salle schools. The agreement involves the DLSU System, La Salle Green Hills, De La Salle Lipa Unified School, and the University of Saint La Salle in Bacolod.

In the August 14 issue of the DLSU Newsletter, the item on Dr. Natividad Pagadut should have mentioned that the conference she attended was sponsored by the Catholic Bible Association of the Philippines, not Christian Bible Association of the Philippines. Our apologies.
