DLSU-Manila faculty named Metrobank Outstanding Teacher
Dr. Rose Marie Salazar-Clemeña, university fellow and full professor of the Counselor Education Department, has been selected as one of the awardees of Metrobank Foundation’s 2000 Search for Outstanding Teachers. The awarding ceremony will be held this September.
Salazar-Clemeña, who has been with the University since 1974, was chosen for her invaluable contributions to the teaching profession through instructional competence, personal integrity and character, and professional and community involvement.
She is currently the coordinator of the College of Education’s (CED) Institute for Educational Measurement, Evaluation, and Statistics and editor of CED’s The Asia-Pacific Education Researcher. Salazar-Clemeña has also served as CED dean from 1992 to 1996 and chair of the Counselor Education Department prior to her Deanship.
She is delighted and humbled that the distinction came on the centenary of the canonization of St. John Baptist de La Salle and his 50th year as patron saint of teachers. Salazar-Clemeña says that “the award is a further affirmation of my vocation as a teacher and a recognition of the Lasallian philosophy of education.”
|Lasallians win in National Marketing Week competitions
The Junior Entreprenuers’ Marketing Association of De La Salle University-Manila recently won in various competitions during the National Marketing Week celebration from July 24 to 30 held at the Glorietta Activity Center.
Marketing students Jolina Mallari, Jett Manio, and Glenn Garcia bagged first place in the jingle-writing contest while advertising management major Edward David bested other participants in the poster-making contest.
She credits DLSU-Manila for providing the environment that nurtured her career and giving her
the opportunity to represent the University in the national search, and her students for continuously inspiring her through the years.
Salazar-Clemeña is actively involved in various professional organizations. She is the Philippine coordinator of the Asia-Pacific Higher Education Research Network and is a past president of the Association of Psychological and Educational Counsellors of Asia-Pacific, Psychological Association of the Philippines and the Philippine Association for Counselor Education, Research, and Supervision; graduate commissioner of the Philippine Accrediting Association of Schools, Colleges, and Universities; and executive secretary of the National Inter-University Forum on Education.
Aside from these, she has also served as consultant to UNESCO, other national organizations, and units of the University. During her sabbatical year in 1996, she conducted a lecture tour among member institutions of the Association of Colleges and Universities in Asia (ACUCA) in Thailand, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan.
Her studies on counseling, personality, measurement, teacher training, and vocational psychology have been included in journals and publications here and abroad. She has authored/edited seven books to date.
Also a research faculty for the schoolyear 2000-2001, she is currently completing her study on “Teaching behaviors and characteristics in relation to student learning outcomes: Validating an innovative in-service education model.”

Salazar-Clemeña and other Metrobank winners will be honored in a three-day recognition program which will include press interviews, audience with President Estrada, Malacañang museum tour, and awardees’ forum. It will culminate in a formal awarding ceremony at the Metrobank Plaza auditorium on September 1, the 38th anniversary of the Metropolitan Bank and Trust Company.
Now on its 16th year, the search honors Filipino teachers who devote their lives to the development of the youth with exemplary competence and dedication, and who best serve as models of excellence.
