The CSC was transferred from the St. Miguel Building to Gokongwei Hall - formerly called Information Technology Learning Center (INTELLECT) Building. The Registrar and Accounting offices, and several colleges were connected to the VAX system thru the network facilitating distributed on-line enrollment, file updating, and access to software/facilities sharing. Dlink twisted-pair network was moved to another computer lab for undergraduate students of the College of Computer Studies.

The MicroVAX 3600 with 14 terminals were acquired and installed for student use. Later, additional 20 terminals were acquired. The VAX 8350 is retained for administrative use. A VAX cluster was established for the two minicomputers allowing user access to any of the VAX units.


Almost all the administrative offices and colleges were connected to the VAX thru the network. The deans could inquire on student information, student schedule, and transcript data. In addition to the file sharing, communication among the administrative offices and colleges were made possible with the phone and electronic mail facilities of the VAX system. College of St. Benilde (CSB) was granted a leased line, allowing continuous direct connection to the VAX in the main campus. In February, the CSC was connected to Internet via a dial-up line. The CSC also facilitated the connection of the University Library to the Dialogue Information Services which provided access to international databases for technological updates and research data. Network connection of the University Library used CDS/ISIS for on-line query. Velasco Building (College of Engineering) was connected to campus-wide network. In September, DLSU became a CAD/CAE training center with the establishment of a partnership with the ATS Technologies, Inc. By the end of the year, an Electrohome projection system was installed in the INTELLECT Seminar room allowing direct screen projection from the microcomputer without the use of a projector.


43 IBM PC/AT and 2 IBM PC/386 with high resolution color monitors were acquired for CAD/CAE and desktop publishing. The softwares used for desktop publishing - WordPerfect and Pagemaker - were likewise acquired. In May, DLSU received an IBM 4381 mainframe computer donated by the Phil-Am Gen Insurance, Inc. The mainframe replaced the IBM 4331 to meet the demands of the academic community.


In February, a MicroVAX 3100 Model 80 was acquired for administrative use. In June, a MicroVAX 3100 Model 90 was acquired for student use.


March 28, DLSU had full Internet connection. FTP, gopher, and web servers were configured and made accessible to the Internet. In September, 50 486SX-based computers with high resolution color monitors were acquired for Windows-based applications for undergraduate and GSBE (Graduate School of Business & Economics) students. Half were networked using Windows for Workgroups installed in L229. 40 486DX-based computers were acquired for the students of the College of Computer Studies. Two networks were installed in G306 using Novell NetWare 3.12. 45
386SX-based computers in the G404 computer lab were networked using Novell NetWare 3.12. Connected offices and departments to the campus network. In October 15, registered gopher server to University of Minnesota (main gopher server in the Internet) December, created a Philippine web site, the first one located in the Philippines! The Information Technology Center also started using Linux servers this year.


Connected all other offices and departments to the campus network. April, installed Library's CDS/ISIS-based automation system on Linux with iBCS2. This was the first Internet-accessible library system in the Philippines. May 18, created the DLSAA information sheet (on-line registration of alumni). Networked 17 386SX-based computers in J212 using Novell NetWare 3.12. Changed the 50 486SX-based PC network in L229 from Windows for Workgroups to Novell NetWare 3.12.


February, upgraded facilities in G404 to 486DX2-based computers. March, installed Alpha Server 2100-4/233. Opened dial-up accounts for faculty members. April 15, installed network switch for campus network. June, CSC became the Information Systems & Technology Center (ISTC). In the 1st Term, SY 1996-97, graduate and undergraduate students were given Internet accounts. In July, dial-up accounts were given to CCS students.

The De La Salle University web site was recognized by PC Computing Magazine as among the world's universities with the best web site.


January, completed installation of fiber optic cables linking eight (8) buildings (LS, Velasco, SJ, Library, WH, M, G, STRC) and he rest of the campus. Installed Network Access Ports (NAPs) around the campus made the Internet more accessible to students. Installed 256-Kbps microwave link to DLSU Health Sciences Campus (DLSU-HSC), Cavite which facilitated DLSU and Internet connections. (DLSU-HSC had a 128Kbps microwave link to DLSU-Dasmariñas.) June, 128 Kbps Internet bandwidth in addition to the existing 64 Kbps line. July 4, installed ATM network. July 14, implemented IntraNetWare for University intranet needs. September, entered into a Microsoft Select Licensing Agreement for all La Salle schools in the country.


June, total staff is 32. Deployed Oracle-based SRM programs. August 5, migrated T-series (automated library system) to Linux, the first in the Philippines. August, launched the DLSU Intranet. Dial-up lines reached a total of 48.


January 5, 1999, Entrance Exam Result was made available on the web. Freshmen applicants could visit the DLSU website to inquire whether or not they passed the DLSU Entrance Exam by typing their first and last names on the Online Query form. An online broadcast system was also created for the Security Office to announce suspension and cancellation of classes over the web. A DOS-based program was run by the Security Office to automatically generate the announcement. Members of the faculty were able to download the Electronic Classlist thru the web.

February 17, replaced the 128-Kbps link with an E1 (2.048 Mbps) link to the Internet. May, piloted web-based enrollment for GSB.

June 1, Internet Account activation was automated.

De La Salle University System selected Oracle Financials/Payroll as its Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) system.

Prepaid Printing Card was introduced to all the computer laboratories under ISTC.

The new attendance monitoring system of ISTC was developed. The system was initially designed to replace the old CSC Attendance Monitoring (CAM) System. With the new IAM, hard copies of the monthly attendance report were no longer produced since Daily Time Records can be queried online. Coordinators were able to query on the DTR, Summary of Attendance and Residency Schedule of their staff.

September, DLSU launched a video conference with Waseda University (Japan).

November, purchased F-Secure Anti-virus software with a two-year maintenance program for all La Salle Schools in the country. 2nd Term SY 1999-2000, GSB piloted an on-line learning program.
