The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) once again granted DLSU Manila Autonomous Status effective November 15, 2007 to November 14, 2012 (per CHED Memorandum order (CMO) No. 59 series of 2007) and recently extended up to May 31, 2014, (per CHED Memorandum Order No. 18 series of 2012). The selection and identification of higher educational institutions to be granted autonomous status are based on several criteria: commitment to excellence, long tradition of integrity and untarnished reputation; and sustainability and viability of operations. The indicators of the above criteria are measured by the number of Level IV and Level III programs of the institution, the number of CHED Centers of Excellence and Centers of Development, and international and national recognition for academic excellence.
The benefits given to institutions having autonomous status include exemption from issuance of Special Order (S.O.) for their graduates; priority in grant of subsidies and other financial incentives from CHED; privilege to prescribe their curricular programs; privilege to offer new courses/programs without seeking permit/authority from CHED; privilege to establish branches or satellite campuses without seeking government authority from CHED; authority to grant Honoris Causa to deserving individuals among others.
