Sports psychology "is the science of applying psychology to sport. Presently, various individuals who are referred to as sport psychologists can be doing very different kinds of things. For example, the research sport psychologist is concerned with testing theory and various conceptual models that purport to predict sport behavior. If, on the other hand, someone indicates that (s) he is an educational sport psychologist, then (s) he is primarily involved in the dissemination of sport psychology knowledge. University and college professors are typically some combination of educational and research sport psychologists. A third category of sport psychologist is the clinical, or counseling, sport psychologist. The clinical/counseling sport psychologist is professionally prepared to help athletes who experience severe emotional problems associated with such things as depression, anxiety, drug dependency, and interpersonal conflict."
