Pathfinder : Computer Numerical Control

Computer Numerical Control (CNC) technology is a part of machining work where the use of machine tools can now be precisely controlled on five axes with the use of sophisticated computer software using computer aided manufacturing (CAM) with the appropriate software and interfaces. (Source: McGraw-Hill machining and metalworking handbook. TJ 1185 W34 1999, Information-Reference, 2nd floor)

CNC stands for Computer Numerically Controlled. CNC always refers to how a machine operates, that is, its basic method of controlling movement. Put another way, a CNC machine uses a stream of digital information (code) from a computer to move motors and other positioning systems in order to guide a spindle over raw material. The forefront of CNC technology is OSAI, a company specializing in numerical control since 1957. OSAI had started out within the machine tool division of Olivetti, and had gradually opened its activity to the international markets. OSAI’s 10 Series CNC is a good practical example of such an attitude and strategy: it uses an “open platform, PC-based architecture“, a generalized, common concept, adopted by all main CNC suppliers.
