Pathfinder - Leadership

Scope Note :

Leadership “is the presence and spirit of the individual who leads and the relationship created with those who are led. Good leadership accommodates the needs and values of those who need to be led. Good leadership takes into account the skills and capabilities of those with whom the leader shares leadership. Good leadership adapts to the purpose and future needs of the organization. Leadership is an art, an inner journey, a network of relationships, a mastery of methods, and much, much more. And because we cannot expect any single heroic individual to possess all these traits, leadership, ultimately, must be a system”. [Quoted from: The leader’s handbook: making things happen, getting things done. HD 57.7 S397 1998 Reference Section]

Here are entered works on the quality, power, or ability to lead others founded upon the prestige of position or upon ability and qualities of character. Works on the exercise of military leaders and power of decision by a commander over his subordinates by virtue of authority, rank, and responsibility are entered under Command of troops. [Quoted from: Library of Congress. Z 695 L5 2001 v. 3 Reference Section]

This website aims to promote a new vision of leadership, one that is independent of position and which shows how leadership "can be bottom-up as well as top-down". The key point about leadership shown upwards is that it can come to an end once those in charge buy the new idea. This means that it is possible to show leadership without having anything to do with getting things done or managing people. The implication of this point is that leadership must be defined as the successful promotion of a new direction, leaving management the job of getting it done through people.
