Scholasticas College (SSC) is a Catholic school for women founded in
1906. Run and managed by the Benedictine Sisters of Tutzing, the school has striven to
remain true to its thrust of education for justice and social transformation. From
this thrust flows the schools commitment to enable the various sectors of the
academic community to a greater sensitivity to and awareness of the pressing issues that
impact on everyones life: economic injustice, environmental degradation and gender
inequality.
Education in SSC, characterized by
academic excellence, a strong liberal arts tradition and a spiritual and moral
orientation, aims at developing critically aware, competent and spiritually grounded
students ready to face the challenges of a rapidly changing environment. Classroom
instruction is enriched by experiential, non-traditional and innovative approaches to
teaching and learning enabling students the ability to develop self-directed/life-long
learning skills and live the Benedictine ideals of ORA et LABORA (prayer and work).
SSC has several undergraduate
courses offered by the Schools of Accountancy, Arts and Sciences, Commerce and Music. In
1997, it opened its graduate program in Womens Studies. Plans are underway to open
graduate programs in Family Psychology and Counseling, Music Education and Piano Pedagogy
in the near future. At present, it has a total enrollment of 2,881 college and 26 graduate
students.
