2nd Asia Conference on Earthquake Engineering

ACEE 2004 - A Success!

March 5-6, 2004
Manila Pavilion, Philippines
Organized by the Association of Structural Engineers of the Philippines, Inc. (ASEP)

The first ASIA Conference on Earthquake Engineering (ACEE2004), organized by the Association of Structural Engineers of the Philippines, Inc. (ASEP) was held last March 5-6, 2004 at the Manila Pavilion, Manila, Philippines. It was attended by about 400 delegates coming from countries such as Japan, Thailand, Taiwan, India, Singapore, USA and the Philippines. More than 60 papers were presented in plenary sessions, parallel technical sessions and continuing professional development (CPD) lecture sessions.

The delegates were welcomed by Ronaldo S. ISON, ASEP president and Cesar PABALAN, ACEE2004 Conference Chair during the opening program. Invited keynote speakers include Hon. Secretary Estrella ALABASTRO of the Dept. of Science and Technology (Philippines) and Dr. Renato SOLIDUM, Jr., Director of the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS). Short messages were also delivered by some of the members of the ACEE2004 International Scientific Advisory Committee(ISAC): Fumio YAMAZAKI (Japan), Yuan-Sen YANG (Taiwan), Panitan LUKKUNAPRASIT (Thailand) and Tso-Chien PAN (Singapore).

The plenary sessions highlighted papers on "EqTAP - a multi-disciplinary innovation of earthquake and tsunami disaster reduction research for Asia-Pacific regions' by Hiroyuki KAMEDA (Japan), "New technologies for enhancing the seismic performance of RC bridges" by Kazuhiko KAWASHIMA (Japan), "Knowing the seismic capacity of our existing buildings" by Benito PACHECO (Philippines), "Application of early seismic loss estimation in Taiwan' by Chin-Hsun YEH (Taiwan) and "Evaluation of seismic damages and vulnerabilities of Metro Manila" by Ramon Santiago (Philippines).

Ten parallel technical paper sessions covering the conference theme of "Science, Engineering, Rehabilitation and Response" highlighted state-of-the-art researches in the broad fields of seismology, earthquake engineering, and earthquake risk mitigation. CPD lecture sessions were also conducted to provide the delegates with more detailed discussion on the topics on seismic hazard, risk and ground response analysis, seismic design codes for buildings, nonlinear analysis of buildings and seismic design of special structures.

The conference was closed with a speech focusing on the Philippine government activities on disaster mitigation by Gen. Melchor ROSALES of the Office of Civil Defense - National Disaster Coordinating Council (Philippines).
