The Bachelor of Science in Physics Minor in Economics or Finance are eleven-trimester programs that bring together a full BS Physics program enhanced with additional course in applied mathematics and 24 units of courses in Economics/Finance. This will provide you with a classic training of physicists, which is known to produce people who are highly skilled in mathematical analysis. Complemented with additional courses in mathematics, especially in the area of forecasting and statistics, and the rudiments of economics or finance, your mathematical skills as a physicist can be very useful in economic or financial analysis. As 39 units of your mathematical courses will be handled by the Mathematics Department, and all 24 units of Economics/Finance courses will be handled by the Economics/Finance departments, you will enjoy a multi-disciplinary that combines the best of Physics, Mathematics and Economics/Finance.
Since computers have become regular tools in business and industry, students of these programs will take nine (9) units of programming, a course in numerical analysis and a course in computational methods. Together, these will provide you with very good working skills in computing for which physicists are also known for.
As a study of complex system, many financial and economic models are analogous to physical systems. Knowledge of physical systems in itself can therefore be extremely useful in finance/economics.
Knowledge in Physics, the highly-touted mathematical skills of a physicist spiced with additional business-oriented mathematics courses, the good computational skills of a physicist, and a sound understanding of economics/finance combine to form a potent mix of skills and knowledge. Together with a set of values that you will require as a Lasallian, these programs are bound to produce highly distinctive individuals whose differentiated skills, knowledge and values makes you unique and highly valuable in the world of finance.
