Bachelor of Science in Chemistry Minor in Business (BS Chem Minor in Business):  BS-CHYB


The Bachelor of Science Chemistry in Minor in Business program aims to produce competent and well-trained graduates with sound understanding of chemical and business concepts. In addition graduates are qualified to take the Chemistry Licensure Examination conducted by the Professional Regulation Commission and become licensed chemists.    Their background will qualify them for careers in the following areas: formulation, analysis and testing, consulting, research and development, environmental analyses, forensics, industrial quality control, marketing, management, technical sales, teaching, chemical or instrumentation sales, entrepreneurship.  They may suit up for work in private and government institutions: laboratories, manufacturing, universities and colleges, biotech firms, food processing firms, pharmaceutical companies, agricultural, and environmentally-oriented organizations.

Analytical Chemistry 1 for Chemistry Majors (ANACHE1)
3 units
An introductory course in chemical analysis covering chemical principles and applications of gravimetry and of titrimetry, including acid-base, complexation, precipitation, reduction-oxidation reactions.
Pre-requisite: General Chemistry 2

Analytical Chemistry Laboratory for Chemistryl Major (ANALAB1)
2 units
A laboratory course where students learn the experimental techniques and develop skills in gravimetric and titrimetric methods of chemical analysis.
Pre-requisite: General Chemistry Laboratory 2; Co-requisite: Analytical Chemistry 1

Analytical Chemistry 2 (ANACHE2)
3 units
A course covering electroanalytical methods with an introduction to basic electronics.
Pre-requisite: Analytical Chemistry 1

Basic Coordination Chemistry (COORCHE)
3 units
An introduction to the chemistry of coordination compounds, including bonding, structures, nomenclature, isomerism, reactivity, and applications. The course emphasizes the study of transition metal chemistry.
Pre-requisite: General Chemistry 2

Biochemistry (BIOCHE1)
3 units
This course covers the fundamental aspects of biochemistry and the structure and dynamics of important cellular components. The properties of carbohydrates, lipids and membranes, proteins and enzymes and nucleic acids are also discussed.
Pre-requisite: Organic Chemistry 2

Biochemistry 2 (BIOCHE2)
3 units
This course deals with metabolism and covers bioenergetics, the design and regulation of metabolic pathways and specific molecular processes involved in the synthesis and degradation of the major cellular components - the carbohydrates, lipids and nitrogen - containing compounds.

Biochemistry Laboratory (BIOCLAB)
1 units
Qualitative and quantitative tests are performed on carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and nucleic acids.

Biorganic Chemistry 1 (BIOORG1)
3 units
A course dealing with the introduction to organic molecules, concepts of hybridization, nomenclature, and functional group classes and stereochemistry.
Pre-requisite: General Chemistry 2

Biorganic Chemistry 2 (BIOORG2)
3 units
This course deals with the applications of concepts from Bioorganic Chemistry 1 to biomolecules. Reactivity, structure, and functions of biomolecules such as amino acids and proteins, carbohydrates, lipids DNA and RNA will be discussed. The course has a laboratory component consisting of three hours per week.

Chemistry of the Environment (CHEENVI)
3 units
A course covering environmental problems, pertaining to air, water, the earth, and life. Chemical concepts are applied in the evaluation of environmental threats to the earth and the biosphere.

Chemistry Research1(CHYRES1)
2 units
A course designed to prepare the student to undertake research in Chemistry. It is devoted to the conceptualization, organization and planning of an original chemical project and seeks to familiarize the student with the chemical literature as well as with the nature of scientific writing. Course requirements include the submission and presentation of a research proposal.

Food Chemistry (CHMFOOD)
3 units
This course is designed to present a unified picture of foods from a chemical standpoint. Emphasis is given to the major constitutions of foods and the chemical changes that occur when they are subjected to processing.

General Chemistry 1 (INOCHE1)
3 units
A course covering the basic principles that include atomic structure, chemical equations and stoichiometry, periodic table chemical bonding and molecular structure, gases liquids, solids and solutions.
Co- requisite: College Algebra

General Chemistry Laboratory 1 for Chemistry Majors (LABCHE1)
2 units
A course developing basic laboratory skills. It includes experiments and exercises illustrating the concepts covered in General Chemistry 1. A more detailed discussion of topics not extensively covered in the lecture is provided through additional experiments and exercises.
Co-requisites: General Chemistry

General Chemistry 2 (INOCHE2)
3 units
A continuation of General Chemistry 1 covering elementary chemical thermodynamics, chemical equilibrium, acid-base theories and applications, reduction-oxidation reactions, and kinetics.
Pre-requisite: General Chemistry 1

General Chemistry Laboratory 2 for Chemistry Major (LABCHE2)
2 units
A continuation of General Chemistry Laboratory 1. Experiments and exercises to supplement General Chemistry 2 are included. The second part of the course deals with the qualitative analysis of cations and anions.
Pre-requisite: General Chemistry Laboratory 1; Co-requisite: General Chemistry 2

Inorganic Chemistry (INOCHE3)
3 units
A course covering structure and bonding in molecules, bonding theories chemical forces, ionic solids, and the chemistry of main group elements.
Pre-requisite: General Chemistry 2

Instrumental Methods of Chemical Analysis (INSMETH)
3 units
A course covering the principles, applications, techniques, scope, and limitations of spectroscopic methods (UV-vis, IR, Raman, AA, MS, NMR, and emission), and chromatographic methods(GC, HPLC).
Pre-requisite: Analytical Chemistry Laboratory 1
Co-requisite: Instrumental Methods of Chemical analysis

Instrumental Analysis Laboratory (INMELAB)
2 units
A series of experiments on chemical analysis using instrumental methods.

Organic Chemistry (ORGCHE1)
3 units
An introduction to the fundamentals of organic chemistry, including hybridization, structures, nomenclature, and the application of electronic effects in predicting physical properties and reactivities. The chemistry of alkanes and alkyl halides is also covered.

Organic Chemistry Laboratory 1 for Chemistry Majors (LABORG1)
2 units
An organic laboratory course designed to develop skills and techniques in handling organic compounds. The laboratory course concentrates on the isolation and purification of organic compounds, and on classical organic analysis.
Pre-requisite: General Chemistry Laboratory 1; Co-requisite: Organic Chemistry 1

Organic Chemistry 2 (ORGCHE2)
3 units
A course covering the discussion of important organic reactions and their mechanisms. The application of these reactions in the strategy and planning of the synthesis of organic compounds are emphasized throughout the course.

Organic Chemistry Laboratory 2 for Chemistry Majors (LABORG2)
2 units
A series of experiments which deal with various types of organic reactions and their application in organic synthesis.
Pre-requisite: Organic Chemistry Laboratory 1; Co-requisite: Organic Chemistry 2

Organic Chemistry3 (CHEMORG)
3 units
A course in organic anlaysis with emphasis on spectroscopy. Special topics such as organometallics, electrocyclic reactions, neighboring group participation and asymmetry may be included.

Physical Chemistry 1 (PYSCHE1)
3 units
An introduction to the concepts of thermodynamics and the properties of systems at equilibrium.

Physical Chemistry Laboratory 1 (PYSLAB1)
1 units
A laboratory course covering experiments illustrating thermodynamic principles.
Pre-requisites: General Chemistry Laboratory 1, Physical Chemistry 1

Physical Chemistry 2 (PYSCHE2)
3 units
A continuation of Physical Chemistry 1 covering electrolyte in solution, electrochemistry, chemical kinetics, nuclear chemistry, crystals, polymers, and colloids.

Physical Chemistry Laboratory 2 ( PYSLAB2)
1 units
A laboratory course covering experiments in electrochemistry, transference and conductance in electrolytic solutions, kinetics, absorption, polymer properties, radiochemistry, and crystal structure.
Pre-requisite: Physical Chemistry Laboratory 1

Physical Chemistry 3(PYSCHE3)
3 units
A course tracing the development of the atomic theory. Emphasis is on quantum chemistry. The postulates of quantum chemistry are introduced and illustrated using simple system. The quantum theory as applied to the hydrogen atom and to many electron atoms and molecules is introduced.
Pre-requisite: Physical Chemistry 2, Differential Equations

Business Organizations (BUSORGA)
3 units
This is an introductory course to the theory and practice of business and management. The objective of this course is to expose students to the theories of management and subsequently apply the four basic management functions (planning, organizing, leading and controlling) and to provide an overview of the different business functions (marketing, production, human resources, finance and operations/production)

Entrepreneurship and environmental scanning for non-commerce students (ENTSCAN)

This course introduces the concept and theory of entrepreneurship and provides the students with an understanding of the concept of opportunity identification and development.

Introduction to Accounting and Financial Management for non-commerce students (FINAMAN)
3 units
This is an introductory course in accounting and financial management. The focus will be enabling the students to understand and analyze the basic financial statements and financial management concepts.

Introduction to Marketing Management (MARKET1)
3 units
An introduction to the basic principles of marketing, covering the determination and analysis of demands of a market, ways of satisfying the needs of consumer with specific products or services through the marketing management process, which includes the basics of the marketing mix (Product, Price, Place, & Promotion). The social responsibilities of business are given special emphasis within the context of marketing.

Introduction to Business law, taxation and the legal environment (BUSILAW)
3 units
An introductory course to the nature, concepts and principles of business law, taxation and the legal environment where businesses operates. Special focus will be given to the discussion of intellectual property rights, business taxation, income taxation and the Philippine corporate/partnership law.

Business policies and strategies (BUSIPOL)
3 units
This is an integrative business course that exposes the students to the basic nature and character of top management decision making and to get them involved in the analysis and formulation of strategies and policies. It will also provide students the opportunity to apply the basic concepts and techniques learned in the various management and business functions by formulating their own business plan or strategic plan.

Venture Creation (VENTCRE)

This is an introductory course which explores entrepreneurship with emphasis on forming and operating new business ventures or inventions and technology.  It covers crucial aspects of assessment of new inventions, capitalization, product design and marketing

Chemistry Thesis (CHYSEMI)
1 unit
A course designed to help the student in Chemistry develop an awareness of recent developments by attending and actively participating in Chemistry seminars. The course seeks to train the student to present results, conclusions and views in public. The student in CHYSEM is required to present a seminar on a chosen topic in chemistry, attend the department seminars and prepare reaction papers.

Chemistry Thesis 2 (chyres2/RESCHEM)
2 units
Development of research topic proposed in Chemistry Thesis 1 through experimentation.

Chemistry Thesis 3 (CHYRES3)
3 units
A continuation of Chemistry Thesis 2. The oral presentation and the submission of the written scientific report.
