Undergraduate Degree Programs Bachelor of Science in Chemistry (BS-CHY)

Bachelor of Science in Chemistry program is designed to provide students with an excellent foundation in chemistry.  It equips them with the necessary laboratory skills and scientific training needed in the competent practice of the chemistry profession.  Lectures, seminars and laboratory classes are geared towards problem evaluation and decision-making.  Courses in the humanities and social sciences are integrated to provide the perspective that will direct scientific efforts toward national concerns.  Graduates are qualified to take the Chemistry Licensure Examination conducted by the Professional Regulation Commission and become licensed chemists.

ARTSCHE: General Chemistry for Non-Science Majors

This course is designed to provide the non-science major with the basic concepts and principles of chemistry on a need-to-know basis to enable the student to appreciate the significant role of chemistry in social, political, economic and ethical issues. Through the main topics of fundamental chemistry, food, energy, air, water, polymers and drugs, the student can develop critical thinking with chemical knowledge to make analytical judgments on societal issues founded on general chemistry.

BCHELE1: Special Topics in Biochemistry 1:  Structure and Function of Biological Membranes/Molecular Basis of Selected Diseases

3 units
Part 1 focuses on the molecular principles to explain the structure, function, dynamics and transport across biological membranes.  Part II looks into the molecular basis of selected diseases and possible therapeutic solutions.
Prerequisite: BIOCHE1(Hard Prerequisite), BIOCHE2 (Soft Prerequisite)

BCHELE2 / Introduction to Plant Biochemistry / Food Biochemistry

3 units
Part 1 of the course aims to present an overview of plant biochemistry to include discussions on photosynthesis, carbohydrate metabolism, nitrogen fixation, reduction and assimilation
Part 2  is a brief introduction to the biochemistry of foods of plant origin.  The course is designed to give students a basic understanding of the biochemical components of plant foods and the changes that occur during the processing of specific food types.

This course covers the fundamental aspects of biochemistry and structure and dynamic of important cellular components. The properties of carbohydrates lipids and membranes, proteins and enzymes nucleic acids, and selected methods of analysis of biomolecules are also discussed.

BIOCHE2   Biochemistry Part 2 for Chemistry and Biochemistry Majors

This course covers topics in metabolism.   The areas to be discussed include bioenergetics, the design and regulation of metabolic pathways and specific molecular processes involved in the synthesis and degradation of major cellular components—the carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and nucleic acid.

BIOCHEM: Biochemistry for Biology and Human Biology Majors
3 units
This course covers the fundamental aspects of biochemistry and structure and dynamics of important cellular components.  The properties of carbohydrates, lipids and membranes, proteins and enzymes and nucleic acids, and selected methods of analysis of biomolecules are also discussed.

BIOORG1: Organic Chemistry 1 for Human Biology Students

3 units
This 3-unit lecture course includes a review of basic principles, nomenclature, as well as structure and reactive sites of organic molecules. It also discusses the different forms of isomerism, the conformations and configurations of organic compounds. The course also covers the physical and chemical properties of alkanes, alkyl halides, alkenes, and alkynes.

BIOORG2  Organic Chemistry 2 for Human Biology Majors
2 units
A 2-unit lecture course covering the structure, nomenclature, physical properties, preparation and chemical properties of aromatic compounds, aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, and carboxylic acid derivatives.

CHEBIO2  Biochemistry 2 for Biology Majors
2 units
This 2-unit course that focuses on the bioenergetics and the design and regulation of
major metabolic pathways   Specific processes involved in the synthesis and degradation of major cellular components—the carbohydrates, lipids, and N-containing biomolecules are tackled.

A first course in general and inorganic chemistry.  It develops in the student basic concepts of matter and its classifications; mass relationships in chemical reactions; the properties of gases, liquids, and solids; some concepts of thermochemistry; quantum theory and electronic behavior; periodic relationship of elements in the periodic table; chemical bonding; intramolecular forces; and solutions.

General Chemistry for Business and Economics Majors

3 units

This course is designed to provide the non-science major with the basic concepts and principles of chemistry on a need-to-know basis to enable the student to appreciate the significant role of chemistry in environmental issues. Through the main topics of global warming, acid rain, and pollution, the student could develop critical thinking with chemical knowledge to make reasoned judgments on societal issues founded on general chemistry. Chemical concepts that will be cited include atomic theory, bonding, molecular geometry, stoichiometry, solutions and acids and bases.

General Chemistry 3

2 units
This course is intended to take the Chemistry major into a deeper discussion of chemical bonding, solids and solutions beyond the level of INOCHE1.  It serves as an introduction to nuclear chemistry.

CHYRES1 
Chemistry Research

2 units
CHYRES1 is a course aimed at teaching the student in Chemistry/ Biochemistry the rudiments of research.  It is principally devoted to the conceptualization, organization and planning of an original chemistry project.  The course seeks to familiarize the student with the chemical literature and the current methods for searching as well as with the various issues involving researchers and the conduct of scientific research.  Guidelines for scientific writing, oral presentations and the preparation of chemistry research proposals will be discussed.
Prerequisite: 20 units of Chemistry

CHYSEMI 
Chemistry Seminar

1 unit
CHYSEMI is a course designed to encourage the student in Chemistry / Biochemistry to be constantly aware of recent developments in the field by actively participating in seminars and research fora.  The student will be trained to study and develop a chosen topic in chemistry and present it in public.  The student will also be required to attend all department seminars and prepare reaction papers.

This course is devoted to the study of a selection of topics in inorganic chemistry in addition to those covered in INOCHE1, INOCHE2, and CHEMTRI. The course focuses on the principles and trends in the chemistry of the elements and on the essentials of structure, bonding, and reactivity of inorganic systems.

The course is devoted to the study of chemical and physical equilibria, solutions of electrolytes, kinetics, surface phenomena and transport property.  The student will be introduced to the qualitative and quantitative treatments of these concepts.

The course serves as a first introduction for the senior undergraduate chemistry major to quantum chemistry.  The course traces the development of the atomic theory, to quantum theory.  The concepts and postulates of quantum mechanics are introduced and illustrated using simple systems including the particle in a box, the Hydrogen atom, the Helium atom, the Hydrogen molecule ion and the Hydrogen molecule.

Understanding Environmental Issues with Chemistry

This course is designed to provide the non-science major with the basic concepts and principles of chemistry on a need-to-know basis to enable the student to appreciate the significant role of chemistry in environmental issues. Through the main topics of global warming, acid rain, and pollution, the student could develop critical thinking with chemical knowledge to make reasoned judgments on societal issues founded on general chemistry. Chemical concepts that will be cited include atomic theory, bonding, molecular geometry, stoichiometry, solutions and acids and bases.

This course is designed to provide an understanding of general chemical principles by following the current developments in materials sciences.  It will include studies on the technological progress in the fields of plastics and polymers; design and delivery of drugs; household products and food and nutrition.  Basic chemical principles including the atomic theory, bonding and polymerization, molecular geometry and isomerism, organic chemistry (and functional groups), intermolecular forces, food components (carbohydrates, fats, proteins) will be introduced and expanded on a need – to – know basis.
