The Applied Corporate Management (APC) Program of De La Salle University (DLSU) started out as a partnership with the European Chamber of Commerce in the Philippines (ECCP). Member companies of the ECCP sought assistance in finding a training/education model that would help them in recruiting junior staff with management potential.
The program, patterned after the dual-tech program in Germany, features three alternate terms of actual experiential learning in the real world of work (on-the-job training), and seeks "to enable students to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values of world-class management."
The 12-term, 195-unit (183 academic and 12 non-academic) program aims to provide students with both theoretical knowledge and practical experience in the various aspects of business management. It also intends to enhance the hands-on experience of the students as well as minimize the cost of training future employees from DLSU on the part of the participating companies.
At the end of the entire program, the students are expected to apply relevant management theories, concepts, and principles while working in a corporate industrial enterprise; and to deepen their values related to: pursuit of excellence, competence, honesty, confidence, nationalism, hard work, commitment, compassion, professionalism, and social responsibility.
ACM graduates are expected to develop skills and competencies in six major areas: (1) solving problems and thinking skillfully, (2) communicating effectively, (3) applying technology, (4) working responsibly, (5) planning and managing a career, and (6) managing resources.
The program's main feature of three terms of internship experience in the company aims to enhance the hands-on experience of the students and at the same time minimize the huge cost for training future employees from DLSU on the part of the participating companies.
In line with the college's thrust to meet the business industry's demand for competent and well-rounded management graduates, the management internship aims to: (1) give the student interns exposure and experience in an actual business organization; (2) enable the students to relate and apply the theories they learn in the university to real business situations and problems; (3) give the students an insight on the various functional operations, processes, techniques and controls currently used in business and industry; (4) develop and instill in the students a positive attitude, self-confidence and self-motivation required of a responsible professional in handling tasks and work in different departments; and (5) impress on the students the importance of human relations in the workplace or business environment.
The Applied Corporate Management Program follows a schedule of 12 trimesters. Upon acceptance into the program, the student is expected to complete the regular required courses in languages, social sciences, natural sciences, mathematics, and the core business professional courses. The first six terms will be taken continuously at DLSU. The 7th, 9th, and 11th terms will be spent undergoing management internship (PRCACM1, PRCACM2, and PRCACM3), during which the student will work full-time in a partner company. On the fourth year, the student will take integrating subjects (Strategic Management or STRATEM and International Business or INTERBU), and is expected to complete his or her undergraduate thesis under the course THSAPC2.
Have no case with the Discipline Office.
During the first trimester of the sophomore year (or during the first trimester of the junior year for double-major students), an ACM student should apply for qualification into the program. The application period starts on the first week of the trimester. Results are announced on the eighth week of the trimester.
The second trimester is the application period for irregular students. Only students who have finished BUSORGA with a grade of 2.0 and are enrolled in HUMABEH are allowed to apply during this term. Acceptance of any student in the second trimester will be conditioned on passing HUMABEH.
There is normally no application in the third trimester of each school year. However, should there be a critical mass of applicants to ensure that there would be at least 16 accepted students, the Business Management Department may open the qualifying process. It is necessary that a petition letter be addressed to the Chair of the Business Management Department with the signatures of all potential applicants. Since this is an exception to the rule, there are no guarantees that such request will be granted.
Students who have previously applied for qualification into the ACM Program are no longer allowed to apply again. They will be asked to shift to another major.
During the first through the third week of the application period, an ACM student who meets the entry requirements must submit the following:
- Letter of application addressed to the Chair of the Business Management Department with ID number below signed name.
- Complete résumé highlighting academic and leadership accomplishments during High School and University years. The student should indicate his/her complete contact details (especially cell phone number) and his/her birth date, and attach a recent 2 x 2 photo.
- CGPA Certification from the Office of the University Registrar. The CGPA should include all terms prior to the term of application. (Alternative: The student can submit a print-out copy of previous terms' GPA and CPGA from his/her MyLaSalle account.)
- Transcript of records. The student should highlight grades in ACTBAS1 (passed), ACTBAS2 (passed), and BUSORGA (at least 2.0; if currently enrolled, the student should submit a copy of EAF reflecting enrollment).
- Photocopy of current EAF. The student should ensure that all courses and schedules are clear.
- Copy of APC flowchart/checklist that would apply to the student should he/she be accepted into the Applied Corporate Management program. The student should highlight orange all subjects already taken and indicate the grades received; then, the student should highlight green all subjects currently taking.
- Certification from the Discipline Office that the student has no disciplinary case.
- Photocopy of the IDs of both parents where their signatures are clearly distinguishable. If the student does not live with his/her parents, he/she must, in addition, submit a photocopy of the ID of his/her guardian. The student must also submit a letter from the parent certifying the guardianship arrangement.
The student should insert all requirements into a plain white/tan short folder (without plastic cover) and fasten them with a plastic fastener at the top in the order discussed above. Using a black marker, the student should indicate his/her name in the folder tab in the format "FAMILY NAME, FIRST NAME MIDDLE INITIAL" (e.g., DRUCKER, PETER F.), and in a manner that it can be easily read when arranged in a filing cabinet.
The complete requirements should be submitted to the Vice Chair of the Business Management Department on or before the due date.
The List of Candidates Pre-Screened for Qualifying Examination will be posted on the bulletin board of the BM Department within three working days from application deadline. If the student's name appears on the list, he/she should proceed to the ITEO office to secure a payment slip, and thereafter pay the testing fee at the Accounting office. The examination fee has historically been P100 per student, although this is subject to change. The student should present the Official Receipt to the Business Management Department secretary, who will track the payment, and to ITEO, who will give the student a test permit that he/she should bring during the testing date.
Unless otherwise announced, testing will be conducted in the ITEO testing room from 8:00 AM to 12:00 NN during the fourth week of the trimester. If the student fails to take the test on the designated date and time and at the designated place, he/she will be deemed no longer interested in pursuing his/her application.
The results of the Qualifying Examination will comprise 30 percent of the student's total score.
At this point 60 percent of the student's total score would have been determined. This includes the student's CGPA and results of the qualifying examination. Only students meeting the cut-off requirement of 35 points will be invited for an interview. The students' ID numbers with their scores will be posted, according to rank, on the bulletin board of the Business Management Department within two weeks from the testing date. If the student's ID number appears on the list, he/she should visit the Vice Chair of the Business Management Department to verify his/her interview schedule.
The student should strictly adhere to the interview schedule given to him/her. The interview will be conducted by two faculty members, together or individually. A third interview by the Chair of the Business Management Department (or the ACM Coordinator should one of the two faculty members who interviewed the student be the Department Chair) will be arranged only when the recommendation of the two faculty members differ.
The results of the Interview will comprise 40 percent of the student's total score.
If the student receives at least 70 out of 100 points, he/she is considered qualified to enter the Applied Corporate Management program. The List of Candidates Accepted into the ACM Program will be posted on the bulletin board of the Business Management Department after the interview of all applicants. Note that if the student is currently enrolled in BUSORGA, he/she will receive only conditional acceptance.
The student must then do the following:
- Secure his/her Letter of Acceptance from the secretary of the Business Management Department.
- Attend a General Assembly to be arranged by the Business Management Department and the Business Management Society (BMS).
- Accept an invitation to the ACM Yahoo! Group and update his/her profile in the database.
