CBE Undergraduate Degree Programs

Bachelor of Science in Commerce major in Business Management (BMG)

The Business Management Program prepares young men and women to become competent managers and entrepreneurs who are fully aware of their social responsibility. The program provides these future professionals with skills in research, opportunity seeking, analysis, and decision-making in the area of business management. Students of the program are taught to be responsive to technological developments, and international economic conditions, and are expected to have the training and motivation necessary to start their own businesses.

Commerce Algebra I (COMATH-1)
3 units
A course providing students a solid and working knowledge of pre-calculus algebra with emphasis on the understanding of concepts and the development of manipulation skills. It covers sets, the real numbers system, special products and factoring, algebraic fractions, exponents and radicals, linear and quadratic functions, and percentage as applied to business problems.

Commerce Algebra II (COMATH-2)
3 units
Continuation of basic algebra including inequalities, theory of equations and analytic geometry.
Pre-requisite: Commerce Algebra 1

Mathematics of Investments (BUSMATH)
3 units
A course covering the basic mathematical tools and operations met in investment problems. It includes topics such as simple interest, simple discount, compound interest, annuities, amortization, sinking funds, and perpetuities.
Pre-requisite: Algebra

Mathematical Analysis (COMCALC)
3 units
An introduction to the fundamentals of mathematical analysis emphasizing analytic geometry and calculus with application in business and economics.
Pre-requisite: Algebra

Business Statistics 1 (COMSTAT1)
3 units
A course teaching the students how to use statistical methods, with emphasis basically on descriptive statistics.
Pre-requisite: Algebra II

Business Statistics II (COMSTAT2)
3 units
A subject dealing with topics on statistical inference such as interval estimation and testing hypothesis, chi-square, and analysis of variance. Regression analysis and forecasting methods are also taken up as statistical tools in problems related to business and economics.
Pre-requisite: Business Statistics I

Quantitative Techniques in Business (QUATECH)
3 units
A study of the quantitative methods for decision making. The course covers linear programming models and other special algorithms, inventory and production models; decision-making process under certainty, uncertainty and risk; decision tree construction and analysis; network models; PERT and CPM; business forecasting models; and computer application.
Pre-requisite: All Mathematics and Computer Courses for Business

Business Organization and Management (BUSORGA)
3 units
An introduction to business and management. Its principal objective is to enable students to understand and subsequently apply the four interdependent management functions of planning, organizing, leading, and controlling (production, marketing, personnel and finance) a small- to medium-scale organization.

Environmental Scanning (ENSVCAN)
3 units
A course which allows the student to identify possible business opportunities in his/her immediate environment. This identification is brought about by matching one’s assessment of the environment (socio-cultural, economic, political, technological) with one’s own needs, interests, personality, and values.
Pre-requisite: Business Organization and Management

Enterprise Research 1 (ENTRES 1)
3 units
A course which introduces the students to business research methodology. It requires students to develop a feasibility proposal on the business opportunities that he has previously identified in the environmental scanning course.
Pre-requisite: Environmental Scanning

Enterprise Research II (ENTRES2)
3 units
A course which provides the students actual application of the research methodologies in a feasibility study on the project proposals made in Enterprise Research I. This course will be conducted through workshops, fieldwork, and group reports.
Pre-requisite: Enterprise Research I

Practicum (PRACTICUM 1, 2, 3)
6 units
A course covering three (3) trimesters which provides students an opportunity to experience the establishment, operation, and liquidation of a microenterprise. Projects are based on the studies developed in Enterprise Research.
Pre-requisite: Enterprise Research; must be qualified to major

Enterprise Policy (ENTEPOL)
3 units
A course dealing with the comprehensive and strategic approaches to management. The interaction between industry evolution, market structure, and strategies of firms are taken up. The course highlights the interface between the firm and the environment and draws from the experience of students in their Practicum in addressing these relationships.
Pre-requisite: Must be qualified to major

Human Behavior in Organization (HUMABEH)
3 units
A course introducing the students to the theories, concepts, models, and dynamics of human behavior in organizations. The course enables students to differentiate the application of these models on small, medium and large scale industries.
Pre-requisite: Business Organization and Management

International Business (INTERBU)
3 units
An intensive analysis of the international dimensions of business management. It includes foreign market opportunities, sales agreements, and legal framework.
Pre-requisite: Must be qualified to major

Management Control and Information System for Entrepreneurs (ENTEMIS)
3 units
An analysis of issues and problems in management accounting, responsibility accounting, analysis of cost behavior, flexible budgets, decision models not just from a theoretical perspective but also from a managerial point of view. The second part of the course examines how management of companies can be improved by efficient computer systems.
Pre-requisite: Must be qualified to major

Personnel Management (MANPERS)
3 units
A course which enables the students to differentiate the approaches in personnel management as applied to small, medium, and large-scale industries. Emphasis will be on topics such as: employee intake, compensation, administration, employee relation.
Pre-requisite: Must be qualified to major

Production Management (PRODMAN)
3 units
A course introducing the students to management tools related to production and operations including concepts in value analysis and appropriate technology as applied to small-and -medium scale industries.
Pre-requisites: Quantitative Techniques in Business, must be qualified to major

Seminar on Entrepreneurship (ENTESEM)
3 units
An integrating course, the subject will expose students to factors behind entrepreneurial successes and failures.
Pre-requisite: Must be qualified to major

Applied Corporate Management Thrust

The Business Management Program with Applied Corporate Management Thrust is a 12-term program that features three alternate terms of actual experential learning in a real world of work provided by operating companies in the Philippines to enable students to acquire the necessary knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values of world-class management.

The program follows a schedule of twelve (12) trimesters to complete the course. The first six (6) terms is to be continuously taken at DLSU and the remaining six (6) terms is divided into 3 alternate terms training in the same company (on-the-job training) and 3 alternate terms at DLSU for the remaining academic courses.

Industrial Relations (INDRELA)
3 units
The course examines the functions, organization and problems of the three main participants within industrial relations - trade unions, management and the government; examines the range of processes used by the participants in the conduct of their relationships: communication and joint consultation, collective bargaining, employee participation, industrial action, conciliation and arbitration; examines a number of industrial relations activities undertaken at the organizational level: policies and procedures, union recognition, negotiation, pay and productivity, grievances and dispute, discipline, redundancy.

International Business (INTERBU)
3 units
An intensive analysis of the international dimensions of business management. It includes foreign market opportunities, sales agreements, and legal framework.
Pre-requisite: Must be qualified to major

Human Resource Management (HUMANRE)
3 units
The course focuses on the human resource management function covering procurement, development, compensation, maintenance, integration, and separation of employees as practised in large enterprises.

Management Research (MANARES)
3 units
The course focuses on the research process in the business setting. It also involves the use of practical examples and skill building techniques to provide a solid grounding in the planning and implementation of a research project.

Strategic Management (STRATEM)
3 units
The course deals with the comprehensive and strategic approaches to management and the interaction between industry evolution, market structure, and strategies of firms. The course will enable the students to assess environmental threats and opportunities in a given economy, distinguish the different frameworks for conducting an industry analysis, identify strengths and weaknesses of a business enterprise and formulate a corporate strategy for a given company.
