LIDAR

LOCATION

Metropolitan Manila

Figure 1. Manila and Manila Bay

Composed of four cities and 13 municipalities, Metro Manila is home to roughly 20% of the country's 62 million Filipinos. The capital, Manila, is situated at the mouth of a natural harbor -- the Manila Bay of world-famous sunsets. Malacanang Palace, the official residence of the Philippine President, stands regally on the banks of the Pasig River, which meanders through the length of the metropolis.

Figure 2. The Cityscape of Manila

Manila's climate is characterized by two distinct seasons - the dry season, from December to April and the wet season, from May to November. The dry season coincides with the southwest monsoon during the months of April and May while the coolest days are usually in December and January.

Lidar stations in the Philippines

The first LIDAR station is located at the Manila Observatory in Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) campus (14.94ºN, 121.07ºE) (Figure 3). This is roughly 13 km from our LIDAR station located at the 3rd floor of the Science and Technology Research Center (STRC) Building (Figure 4) of De La Salle University (DLSU) (14.34ºN, 120.60ºE).

As shown in figure 5, the ADMU facility is located near the Marikina Valley while the DLSU facility is 14 meters above sea level and 900 meters from the Manila Bay.
