The Department of Literature (or Literature Department) offers various services and specialized courses in literature and culture for all colleges at the University. The Department has a faculty that is strong in creative writing as well as in research on Philippine literature and cultural studies.
The Department of Literature aims to be the leading center of literary and cultural studies in the Philippines and the Asia-Pacific, in the areas of:
Literary Production – in the traditional genres of poetry, drama, fiction, and creative nonfiction; in the translation of creative texts into Filipino, other Philippine languages, and English; in multi-genre, hybrid, hyper and other texts blurring genres and redefining notions of “texts.”
Literary Pedagogy – on both the graduate and undergraduate levels; in both the major and core curriculum courses; in seminar-lecture courses on literary history, genres, and theory, as well as in craft-workshop courses in creative writing.
Literary Research – primarily in the field of Philippine literary history and its regional constituents; in critical theory and poetics, and literary and cultural criticism.
Through these three main thrusts, the Department wishes to nurture scholars and artists who are conscious and appreciative of their cultural heritage, who will make significant contributions to Philippine and Asia-Pacific literature and culture, and who will use their creative and critical eye for the betterment of the nation and the glory of God.
